The Healing Power of Receiving Love

YThe Healing Power of Receiving Love

“Accept what people offer. Drink their milkshakes. Take their love.”
~ Wally Lamb, She’s Come Undone

My best friend has survived breast cancer. Twice.

Her recovery after the mastectomy was long and painful. I couldn’t see her for a couple of months while she healed.

When we finally met up for lunch, something small—but powerful—happened.

A Lesson in Letting Love In

The check came. I grabbed it. She grabbed it back.

We had a full-on “come to Jesus” moment in the middle of the restaurant.

I told her, “I can’t make the cancer go away. Can’t take your pain. I can’t fix this. But I can buy you lunch. That’s one way I can show you how much I care. Please—let me do what I can.”

And finally, she did.

It’s Easier to Give Than to Receive

Let’s be honest—being the caregiver feels safer. You’re in control. You’re the one offering the love, not needing it.

But being the receiver of love? That’s vulnerable. That’s exposing. It’s scary as hell.

Admitting that you need help or kindness can feel like weakness. But it’s not.

In fact, allowing others to care for you is one of the strongest, bravest things you can do.

Receiving Love Is an Act of Love

Here’s something I want you to remember: Every time someone offers to walk your dog, buy you lunch, or simply listen when you need to vent—that’s an expression of love.

And you know how you love them back?

You let them do it.

  • You let them show up for you.
  • You let them express their care.
  • You receive love with an open heart.

That simple act of allowing does as much for them as it does for you.

Be Generous in Both Directions

So, be generous. With your friends. our family. With yourself.

Let love in.

It’s not weakness. It’s connection. And it’s how healing begins.

Sending you all so much love.
